Teaching Mathematical Thinking (TMT) is University of Idaho's State Department of Education approved version of MTI. This course provides an opportunity to study fundamental mathematical theory underlying the content area of number and operation and student reasoning of number and operation topics within a framework of a student-centered, problem-based classroom. Topics will include number systems, ways of representing numbers, meanings of operations and how they relate to one another, and computation within the number system as a foundation for algebra. Pedagogical topics will focus on attending to student thinking and reasoning through the use of discourse and questioning, professional noticing, and the effective use of manipulatives or other mathematical tools.
We have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation; weighing the needs of personal safety and recertification requirements for local educators. One of the critical features of the TMT course is the opportunity for teachers to discuss mathematical content and pedagogy with others from different school districts and grade levels during the week-long course. We can achieve some of this through available technologies but want to ensure we provide the most satisfactory learning experience possible.
We will hold an online version of the Grades K-2 course June 22-26, 2020. This course will require synchronous meetings (via Zoom) twice a day and will have asynchronous tasks each day as well. We will meet each day from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. via Zoom during which a task or exercise will be introduced. The task will be completed offline, before class reconvenes live on Zoom from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. for discussion. There will be homework tasks each evening which may include solving a math problem or watching video of students and reflecting on specific aspects of student thinking.
